6 Tips for Working from and Using Devices at Home
With working remotely becoming more popular and multiple family members using the home internet for everything from homework to streaming services, it’s important to keep your devices safe. Here are six tips to help keep you and your family safe from cyber threats at home:
1. Stick to Approved or Company-Issued Devices
We know it may seem easier to set up your home computer for work since you’re already there, but it’s smart to just use the computer or devices your company provides. These typically already have extra antivirus protection included to make sure your information stays safe. Plus, they can also help prevent your family members from accessing any sensitive information.
2. Remember to Log into Your VPN
Most companies will provide their remote workers with a virtual private network (VPN) to help avoid cyberattacks on their devices. If your company offers one, make sure to log in every time you use your computer. This can protect your location and other personal information online.
3. Only Use Approved Software and Tools
It’s smart to stick to the software, apps and tools that your company chooses rather than trying to incorporate your own preferences. The platforms your company chooses are often chosen with cybersecurity threats in mind and can even have more security measures in place. This is also a good reminder to have your family members use safe or approved platforms and apps on their own devices. This can help the entire household avoid cyberattacks and phishing schemes.
4. Keep Your Devices Up to Date
This not only goes for your work devices but your family’s personal devices, too. Making sure your software is up to date can help you maintain the latest security measures and virus prevention to protect your personal and company data. Also, be sure to back up your important files or information on a cloud or hard drive in case you or your family encounter any issues.
5. Be Cautious with Public Wi-Fi
We know it can be nice to work remotely from a coffee shop or have your family members use their personal devices out and about but remember to be careful with public Wi-Fi. Since you can’t be sure what security measures that network has in place, try and use a mobile hotspot instead if possible. You may even be able to chat with your employer about this so you can save on some usage costs.
6. Don’t Be Afraid to Set Up Boundaries
Whether you’re hosting a meeting, joining a business call or even attending a virtual conference, it’s wise to set boundaries. If sensitive information is likely to come up, make sure to let your colleagues know and position yourself in a safe spot so roommates or family members aren’t hearing the full conversation. Remember, you can also use meeting passwords and other features to keep everyone safe.
When you work from home, you want to make sure you’re safe from cyber threats – whether that’s once a week or five days a week. That’s why it’s important to prioritize your online safety, even when it comes to your family’s personal devices.
